With the globalization of Indian Economy, vast opportunities of growth have been thrown open for the computer software and hardware industry. Software being one of the largest growing sectors of the Indian economy, the department of Computer Science & Engineering at the Mehr Chand Polytechnic has been at the forefront of churning out Software Engineers with a high caliber of technical expertise. Besides imparting theoretical knowledge, a lot of stress is laid on hands-on training and overall development of the individual’s personality.
There are two fundamental paradigms in science and engineering about two decades ago – physical experimentation and mathematical analysis. Today, computer based simulation and visualization has emerged as third one. Computers are most powerful tools to access information. Department of computer science and engineering was started in 2003 with an intake of 60 students. The course curriculum is comprehensive and aims to provide sound theoretical concepts. The course curricula have been designed mainly to focus on the following thrust areas: –
- Computer Network
- Databases
- Software Systems
- Embedded Systems
Duration of the course is of three years and Examinations are conducted by Punjab State of Technical Board, Chandigarh.
Computer Engineering Department of Mehr Chand polytechnic is well known for rigorous exposure to hands on practice to reinforce the spirit of excellence among the students and to make them successful technocrats. There are three computer labs in the department. The labs are well furnished, equipped and air-conditioned. There are about 60 number of computers all with Pentium Processor. All the labs are on LAN with 24 hr 256 Kbps Leased Line (Broadband 1:1) Internet facility.

The criteria for accessing student performance includes planning, execution, and quality of Performance, Report writing skills and viva voice.
There is a gap between the products of Engineering Institute and requirements of industries, with the motive of reducing this colossal gap; the students have to undergo training in relevant industry. Report Writing Skills and Seminar Presentation do the evaluation of performance.
A quality placement of any institute is the caliber of student, which has correlation with efforts of the students and faculty. I feel immense proud to inform that many industries approach us for campus placements like Trident, AMP Solutions, L & T, Spice, etc .
By considering, the need of industries for soft skill & interview skills and working with this aim in mind, at computer department we lay special emphasis on the personality development. Workshops on personality development, interview skills and behaviour modification etc. are regular features at department. Our faculty and students are also involved in developing and delivering executive development programs for industries.
